N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

NAC is an amino acid derivative evaluated in various studies for its antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity. It significantly boosts natural antioxidants level in the body, including glutathione, and also help suppress respiratory mucus level. Lab studies suggested that NAC effectively inhibits viral replication, enhances immune response, and suppresses inflammatory response [38-40]. Medical research studies reported that NAC intake helps improve bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms. Moreover, combined with standard COVID-19 treatment, NAC showed positive outcomes during COVID-19 by reducing the mortality rate and risk of progression to severe conditions [37, 41-43]. In contrast, certain studies didn’t find any positive aspects of NAC; however, research suggests that NAC, combined with standard treatment, improves outcomes and helps COVID-19 treatment.
